Commute Greener! Story
Commute Greener! started out as an idea from a group of Volvo employees. Their vision was to develop an IT solution that would motivate people to do something good for the environment. A prototype was released in the spring of 2009 to help Volvo employees measure the time, efficiency, and environmental impact of their commuting. And, the results were extremely positive. By using a small application on their mobile phones that calculated the environmental impact of each commute, employees were able to reduce their C02 footprint by 30% in just one month’s time.
Along the way, the small idea has picked up steam and support from key partners. With the launch of Commute Greener! as a global service, we are able to help companies, cities, and individuals around the world understand how to commute in a greener way. As more and more people join in the Commute Greener! initiative, the bigger the impact we can have on the environment. Together, we can make a big leap.
Why Commute Greener?
To Contribute to the Environment through our focus on Environmental Care
Climate change is one of the most important global environmental issues of our time. As one of Volvo’s core values, environmental care expresses our commitment to reduce any adverse impact on the environment from our products and operations. The Volvo Group is dedicated to improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions and noise from our products. Across operations, we are reducing waste, emissions, energy consumption and our carbon footprint.
Commute Greener! provides a complement to the Volvo Group’s key activities related to CO2-neutral production and in reducing the environmental impact of all aspects of the product lifecycle. You can learn more about the Volvo Group’s other initiatives in this area here:

To Deliver Increased Efficiency for Cities and Road Infrastructure
In addition to the purely environmental benefits, there is significant potential for improving the efficiency of the existing road network. Many environmental problems results from traffic jams during the rush hour, which affect most of the major cities all over the world. The hope is that motivating individuals to commute in a greener way will also reduce pressure on the roads and increase the range of commuting alternatives available.
