The Commute Greener Story

Commute Greener started out as an idea from a group of Volvo employees. Their vision was to develop an IT solution that would motivate people to do something good for the environment: Everyone can do something and to take a positive step to create good energies. A prototype was released in the spring of 2009 to help Volvo employees measure the time, efficiency, and environmental impact of their commuting. And, the results were extremely positive. By using a small application on their mobile phones that calculated the environmental impact of each commute, employees were able to reduce their CO2 footprint by 30% in just one month’s time.

Along the way, the small idea has picked up steam and support from key partners. With the launch of Commute Greener as a global service, we are able to help companies, cities, and individuals around the world understand how to commute in a greener way. As more and more people join in on the Commute Greener initiative, the bigger the impact we can have on the environment. Together, we can take a big leap.

To Deliver Increased Efficiency for Cities and Road Infrastructure

In addition to the purely environmental benefits, there is significant potential for improving the efficiency of the existing road network. Many environmental problems results from traffic jams during the rush hour, which affect most of the major cities all over the world. The hope is that motivating individuals to commute in a greener way will also reduce pressure on the roads and increase the range of commuting alternatives available.
